What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) explained: what it means, how it differs from SEO, and what the research on AI citations actually shows.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and writing content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews can extract, quote, and cite it, instead of optimizing only for a ranked list of blue links.
Type "generative engine optimization" into Google and you will get a mix of vendor blog posts, a Wikipedia entry, and increasingly, an AI Overview that itself demonstrates the thing it is defining. That is not a coincidence. It is the clearest possible illustration of what this term describes.
The one-sentence version

Traditional SEO optimizes for a position in a list. GEO optimizes for a sentence being lifted out of your page and placed inside someone else's answer, with your brand attached as the source. Where the term comes from
GEO is not marketing slang invented by an agency. It was coined in a 2024 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," from researchers at Princeton and Georgia Tech, later published at the ACM SIGKDD conference (arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735). The paper built a large benchmark of diverse user queries across multiple domains, called GEO-bench, and tested specific content interventions to see which ones increased a passage's odds of being used in a generative engine's answer.
The result worth remembering: adding statistics, direct quotations, and citations to a passage were the three strongest levers the researchers tested, producing up to a 40 percent relative improvement in visibility for the best-performing methods. Vague, unstructured, or purely promotional writing performed worst. That single finding is most of what a content team needs to know about GEO in practice: write like you are handing a fact-checker a source, not like you are handing a reader a pitch.
Why this needed a new name at all
Search engines rank whole pages against a query and return a list. The user clicks through, and the page gets the visit. That model rewards things like backlinks, domain authority, and matching a query's exact phrasing in a title tag.
Generative engines do something structurally different. They decompose a question, retrieve candidate passages from many pages, synthesize an answer, and then decide which of those source passages (if any) to cite. The unit being evaluated is not the page. It is the passage. A 2,000-word article can be effectively invisible to an AI engine if none of its individual paragraphs stand on their own as a complete, quotable answer, even if the page ranks well and reads perfectly well for a human skimming top to bottom.
That is the practical reason GEO exists as a distinct discipline: the optimization target moved from "the page" to "the paragraph," and most content written for 2015-era SEO simply was not built at that resolution. Ranking well helps, but it is not the whole game
It would be convenient if "rank #1 on Google" and "get cited in AI Overviews" were the same problem solved twice. They are correlated, but loosely.
Ahrefs analyzed 1 million keywords that triggered Google AI Overviews and pulled 1.9 million citation links out of those results to measure the relationship directly (ahrefs.com/blog/does-ranking-higher-on-google-mean-youll-get-cited-in-ai-overviews). They found a Spearman correlation of 0.347 between ranking in Google's top 10 and being cited in the AI Overview's top 3 links, a positive but only moderate relationship. Even pages ranking #1 organically appeared among the top 3 AI Overview citations only about half the time. A second, slightly stronger correlation (0.445) showed that once a page is cited, its organic rank does help determine how prominently it is featured within the citation.
The practical read: strong SEO fundamentals raise your odds of being in the AI engine's candidate pool, but they do not decide whether your specific passage gets picked once you are in it. That second decision is what GEO as a discipline is actually about.
What GEO looks like in practice
Strip away the acronym and GEO is a fairly short list of concrete habits, most of which map directly to what the research above found effective:
Write self-contained passages. Each key claim in an article should make sense if it were the only sentence a reader (or a model) ever saw from that page. That means naming the subject explicitly instead of leaning on "it" or "this," and putting the answer before the explanation instead of building up to it.
Attach a number wherever you can source one. A specific, cited statistic is more citable than an adjective. "GEO can meaningfully increase visibility" is forgettable. "Adding statistics and citations improved visibility by up to 40 percent in a controlled benchmark" is the kind of sentence a generative engine will actually lift, in part because it is checkable.
Cite your own sources. The GEO research found that quotation and citation additions were among the strongest levers, and it makes intuitive sense: engines trained to synthesize trustworthy answers favor content that itself behaves like a trustworthy source, complete with attribution.
Structure for extraction, not just for skimming. Headings that state a complete claim, FAQ sections with standalone question-and-answer pairs, and short paragraphs all make it easier for a retrieval system to isolate exactly the chunk it needs.
Keep technical SEO intact. None of the above matters if an AI crawler cannot reach or parse the page. Clean HTML, no crawler blocks, and reasonable page speed are still table stakes, they just are not sufficient on their own anymore.
Measure citations directly, on a schedule. Because the correlation with organic rank is only moderate, you cannot infer AI citation performance from a rank tracker. It has to be measured on its own terms, repeatedly, the same way you would track backlinks or organic traffic.
A before-and-after example
Abstract advice about "self-contained passages" is hard to apply without seeing it done. Here is the kind of rewrite GEO actually looks like on a real page.
Before, written for a human skimming top to bottom:

A generative engine has almost nothing to extract from that paragraph. It names no technique, states no number, and every claim depends on the sentence before it. Pulled out on its own, it says nothing.
After, written for extraction:
A GEO audit measures six things: how often ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini mention a brand across a set of buyer-intent questions, the brand's average position when named, whether the AI cites the brand's own site as a source, competitor visibility on the same questions, technical crawler-accessibility issues, and a ranked list of fixes.
Same underlying facts about the same product, but the second version names a specific artifact (a GEO audit), gives a concrete number (six things), and lists them so each one could be lifted as a standalone answer to "what does a GEO audit check." That is the entire discipline in miniature: replace a claim that only makes sense in context with a claim that is true on its own.
Common mistakes teams make with GEO
Treating it as a keyword-stuffing problem. Repeating "generative engine optimization" more often does not help. Generative engines are synthesizing meaning, not pattern-matching strings, so the fix is clearer writing, not denser writing.
Chasing llms.txt as if it were a ranking file. It is a reasonable piece of hygiene, similar in spirit to a sitemap, but no major AI engine has confirmed it factors into what gets cited. Time is better spent rewriting passages than perfecting a file no engine has confirmed it reads.
Measuring success with a rank tracker. As the Ahrefs correlation data above shows, organic rank and AI citation are related but distinct outcomes. A team that only watches Google Search Console will miss a real citation problem or falsely credit a real citation win to the wrong cause.
Rewriting once and never checking again. AI engines change retrieval and synthesis behavior on their own schedule, not yours. A passage that got cited in one query run can stop being cited a month later with no change on your end. Treat citation tracking as a recurring measurement, not a one-time fix.
Where this fits with an actual GEO engagement
Everything above is something a team can do in-house with time and discipline. Where it gets harder to do consistently is the measurement step: running the same buyer-intent questions against ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews every month, tracking whether your brand shows up, where competitors show up instead, and which specific technical or content gaps are costing you citations.
